New York City's housing stock is among the oldest in the country — and that means electrical systems that were installed decades ago are still powering modern appliances, smart devices, and high-draw equipment they were never designed to handle. Knowing when to upgrade is critical for both safety and code compliance.

Flickering or Dimming Lights — If lights dim when you run the microwave or flicker when no one is touching the switch, your electrical panel may be undersized for your current load. This is one of the earliest warning signs of an overloaded circuit.

Frequently Tripping Breakers — A breaker that trips once is doing its job. A breaker that trips repeatedly is telling you the circuit is consistently overloaded. Rather than resetting it repeatedly, call a licensed electrician to assess whether you need a dedicated circuit or a panel upgrade.

Two-Prong Outlets Throughout the Home — Ungrounded two-prong outlets are a sign of pre-1960s wiring. Modern appliances and electronics require grounded three-prong outlets, and many insurance policies no longer cover homes with ungrounded systems.

Aluminum Wiring — Homes built between 1965 and 1973 may have aluminum branch-circuit wiring, which poses a significantly higher fire risk than copper. If your home falls in this range, have a licensed electrician inspect and, if necessary, retrofit the wiring with copper pigtails.

No GFCI Protection in Wet Areas — Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets are required by code in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor areas. If your wet-area outlets don't have the TEST/RESET buttons, they're non-compliant and potentially dangerous.

Burning Smell or Discolored Outlets — Any odor of burning plastic or outlets that feel warm to the touch are immediate emergencies. Turn off the circuit and call a licensed electrician before using it again.
